Antistatic Coning Oils

Overview :

Coning oil, also known as yarn lubricating oil or anti-static textile oil, is an emulsifiable oil which can be made from mineral oils and / or biodegradable oils, such as synthetic oils and vegetable oils, to which additives are added to make it emulsifiable and to give it anti-static property. Coning oil can broadly be classified as a Textile lubricant.

Uses and Benefits :

Coning oils protect yarns during throwing processes, another name for texturizing, warping, covering or twisting, by reducing friction coefficient and lowering static electricity's impact on yarn. Texturising is a finishing step that transforms the POY supply yarn into DTY and hence into an attractive and unique product. During texturing, pre-oriented yarn (POY) is permanently crimped using friction. As a result, elasticity and heat retention are increased, the yarn receives a pleasant handle, while thermal conduction is simultaneously reduced. The application of coning oil is important for smooth operation throughout most processes of textile chain. Depending on downstream, a certain amount of oil can be required for higher efficiency and less disruptions. Oil applied in one step of the process is usually consumed or eliminated during the following process step, only again to be applied if required in the next step.

Coning oil helps limit yarn breakage and quality defects by reducing yarn to yarn and yarn to metal friction. Special additives to reduce friction are added for this purpose which also help improve anti-static property of the oil. Due to the anti-static property of the oil, when coning oil is applied on the yarn it lowers the static electricity's impact on yarn by improving it's evacuation.

Desired properties of Coning Oil  :

A good Coning oil should be non-splashing. Splashing of oil during it's application, especially on high speed machines, can be a safety hazard for the employees working in the plant due to slippery surface. It also results in wastage and increased cost. Coning oils should give uniform pick-up on the yarn (typically 2-5%), good filament cohesion and regular bobbin winding and unwinding tensions which are key for downstream processes. Coning oils should have good anti-static and washable, also called scouring, property. Scouring of Coning oil is done in warm to hot water having temperature between 30 deg. C to 90 deg. C with pH of between 8-9 preferably using a detergent. Good quality Coning oils should be resistant to oxidation when exposed to air, heat or UV and should have storage life of at least one year.

Other preferred properties are high flash point, high viscosity index, low volatile content and is typically of light colour, odourless and non-staining.

REACH and OEKO-TEX regulations  :

New regulations related to chemical usage such as REACH and OEKO-TEX have made it necessary for Coning oils to be free from Alkylphenol Ethoxylates (APEOs). REACH is a regulation of the European Union, adopted to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals, while enhancing the competitiveness of the EU chemicals industry. It also promotes alternative methods for the hazard assessment of substances in order to reduce the number of tests on animals.

In principle, REACH applies to all chemical substances; not only those used in industrial processes but also in our day-to-day lives, for example in cleaning products, paints as well as in articles such as clothes, furniture and electrical appliances. Therefore, the regulation has an impact on most companies across the EU.

Oeko-Tex Standard 100 or Öko-Tex Standard 100 (sometime misspelled Oktex) is an independent testing and certification system for textile products from all stages of production (fibres, yarns, fabrics, ready-to-use end products, including accessories) along the textile value chain.

The label, 'Confidence in Textiles' of the product-related Oeko-Tex Standard 100 (textiles tested for harmful substances) is supplemented by the certification of environmentally friendly production facilities according to Oeko-Tex Standard 1000 and by the product label Oeko-Tex Standard 100plus for products tested for harmful substances from environmentally friendly production.

Apart from ready-to-use products, all textile raw materials and intermediate products from all stages of production such as yarns, fabrics or finished fabrics can also be certified before further processing.

Biodegradable Coning oils :

There is also a growing demand for biodegradable coning oils. Biodegradable lubricants are defined by virtue of their low toxicity and also their ability to be rapidly decomposed by living organisms. Biodegradable standards such as OECD 301B are the norm for making biodegradable lubricants (Biolubes) such as Coning oils. Biodegradable Coning oils can be made from vegetable oils, mainly rapeseed oil, but also synthetic esters. Each base has it's own particular advantages : Vegetable oils are almost 100% biodegradable and are inexpensive. Synthetic oils are better at resisting oxidation, ensuring longer service life.

Criteria for selecting an appropriate Coning oil  :

1) Performance (regular oil pick-up for smooth and easy unwinding, good filament cohesion and lubrication to limit breakages and easier weaving/knitting, no oil splashing nor misting to protect machines and operators)

2) Compatibility (adapted chemistry to cover different raw materials, no damage caused to plastic parts and machine components, self-emulsify ability for easy removal using standard washing processes)

3) Compliance (free from alkylphenol ethoxylates and other SVHC of REACH regulations, compliance with specific textile standards such as Oekotex standard 100 to protect people as well as the environment, ultimately biodegradable solutions for better sustainability).
